ADVENTURES (OR JUST CHILL)

We hope your stay at Casa Karibu will include plenty of time to simply enjoy the day and nature as it comes, and absorb the beauty you’re in. Some of the things you can experience in our area are listed below, and some are seasonal or tide dependent.

Please book these activities in advance through Clive and Laurie, to ensure fair prices and the right service providers.

At Casa Karibu

Watch the comings-and-goings in the bay and on the beach, from the comfort of the front deck.
Take a refreshing swim in your own private swimming pool, and chill out on the pool deck, watching the birds.
Read a good book – we have plenty on our shelves.
Breathe in the spectacular sunsets and twinkling lights of Maputo, while sipping a cocktail or enjoying a couple of cold ones.

Follow the path to the pristine beach

Walk down a short ramp on the side of the house, feel the soft sand between your toes, and simply relax.
Splash in the sea – a lovely way to start the day!
Snorkel on an incoming tide (this kit can be rented). Or experience the thrill of kite surfing, if you have your own gear.
At low tide, you’ll find pansy shells, sandworms, sea urchins and sea cucumbers on the sandbanks, which are also great for soccer or cricket.

Heading north

Fish off the rocks at the point, or further on, at Pont de Torres.
Take a long walk (about 8km there and back) on the pristine beach to the beautiful bay of Ponta Abril on the ocean side, with its lovely swimming beach, fascinating yacht-wreck, and invigorating Indian Ocean surf.

Heading south

Paddle our canoes (we have two) around the mangroves – or arrange to take a guided tinny, if you like.
Walking along the sand, en route to Bemugi’s beach bar and restaurant (about 500m away), you’ll pass some cottages and a small beach bar.
(Rum and Raspberry, anyone? The local beer is excellent, too.)
Bemugi’s does great food – advance booking is advisable. Their samosas make great sundowner snacks.
(Some days, you might buy delicious fresh crabs and mussels from the local children who come to the house, too.)

In the village

Santa Maria is the main village and trading area.
Along the road to the village there is a small spaza shop that delivers to the house whenever they can.
If you didn’t come in your own vehicle, we’ll book you a local taxi to take you to Santa Maria village.
There are a few small shops selling biscuits, sweets, drinks and lots of other dry goods. There’s also a bakery that makes fresh bread (or Pao, as it’s called in Portuguese). And a market selling tomatoes and onions, chillis and some fruit.
Marietta’s is great for lunch* – her chicken and chips are really delicious.

Sail-away-for-a-day

For something different, rent a dhow* and sail across the channel to Inhaca and Portuguese Island, where you can have lunch in the village, do some snorkelling and enjoy sundowners on the deck on the way home.
There’s also a half-day option*, and sunset cruises* around Maputo Bay.

On the wilder side

Take a helicopter flip* and enjoy breathtaking bird’s eye views of the bay.
Or go deep-sea-fishing*. Explore Inhaca and the ancient lighthouse on an open 4×4 land cruiser*.
Watch whales* (July to October) or turtle egg laying* (October to November) and hatching* (January).
Visit the flamingoes* in the Inhaca Estuary – tide and weather permitting.
Walk up the dunes to the viewpoint, or hike through the coastal forest tracks, where you’ll find rare insects, birds and, if you’re lucky, suni buck.

And, on crystal-clear nights, just star gaze… anywhere.
